INDIANAPOLIS – On Saturday, January 10, Freemasons from across the state gathered at the historic Scottish Rite Cathedral for the annual Founders Day celebration. The event served as both a reflection on our storied past and a bold roadmap for the future of the Craft in Indiana.
The weekend began early for many, as Brothers traveled to the circle city on Friday evening. These informal gatherings in the downtown area provided a vital opportunity for fraternizing and strengthening brotherly bonds—the very essence of our fraternity—before the formal proceedings commenced the following morning.
A Morning of Tradition and Vision
The proceedings officially opened at 9:00 AM under surprisingly mild winter skies, which eased the travels of those coming from the furthest corners of the state. The program began with a powerful theatrical performance written by RWB John Bridegroom and staged by the theatrical group of the Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis. The play set a contemplative tone for the day, highlighting the values that have sustained the fraternity for centuries.
Following the performance, the Grand Commandery of the Knights Templar of Indiana formed a majestic Arch of Steel to receive Most Worshipful Brother Randy Seipel, Grand Master of Indiana. In a stirring keynote address, the Grand Master offered words of inspiration, calling on the Brethren to lead with integrity in their communities.
The leadership transition and vision for the coming years were then brought into focus through a series of officer presentations. RWB John Bridegroom, Deputy Grand Master, presented the strategic direction for Indiana Freemasonry for the 2026/2027 term, outlining the broad strokes for growth and modernization. He was followed by RWB David Westmeyer, Senior Grand Deacon, who addressed the critical duty of "Guarding the West Gate," reminding the assembly of the importance of maintaining high standards for those seeking admission.
Adding to the administrative and fraternal discourse, RWB Dave Housler, Junior Grand Deacon, provided practical insights on membership retention and how to keep Brothers engaged both within and beyond the Lodge walls. RWB Jerry Mable, Junior Grand Warden, delivered a thoughtful speech titled "Knock, and it Shall be Opened to You," while RWB Steve Bates, Senior Grand Warden, focused his remarks on the foundational principles of building a true and lasting Brotherhood.
Preserving Our History
The afternoon focused heavily on the stewardship of Indiana’s Masonic heritage. MWB William A. Reiners, PGM, delivered a fascinating historical presentation on MWB John B. Martin, who served as Grand Master from 1835–36. MWB Reiners detailed his personal journey in uncovering the history and the physical likeness of this Vincennes-based leader from nearly two centuries ago.
Further emphasizing the importance of our physical history, WB Dirk Rider, Director of PR & Marketing, spoke on the "Place, Purpose, and Posterity" of Schofield Lodge No. 1818 UD and the Schofield House. He stressed that preserving these sites is not merely about maintaining old buildings, but about honoring the cradle of Indiana Freemasonry for future generations.
Charity and Stewardship
The day also featured vital updates on the fraternity’s philanthropic pillars. Brother Chad Davis shared the latest developments from the Indiana Masonic Home, our crown jewel of fraternal care, while MWB Ken Willis, Jr., PGM and Grand Treasurer, provided an overview of our various Masonic charities and the impact of our collective generosity. While the main presentations took place in the auditorium, a specialized breakout session was held concurrently for Lodge Secretaries and Treasurers, providing them with the tools and administrative updates necessary to manage their respective Lodges effectively.
Looking Ahead
The 2026 Founders Day was more than a series of meetings; it was a day defined by the joy of meeting old friends and the excitement of making new ones. The atmosphere was one of renewed energy and shared purpose.
As we return to our home Lodges across Indiana, the message of the day remains clear: our fraternity is built on a foundation of history, but its future depends on our active engagement today. If you were unable to join us this year, we hope to see you at the Cathedral next January.
