We each remember that distinct moment - the quiet whisper that led us to the threshold of Freemasonry. We did not arrive by chance; we were drawn by a thirst for Light, for personal growth, and for a purpose greater than ourselves. Yet, as the years pass, the dust of routine and daily obligation can dim that initial spark. If you find your resolve flickering, take a moment to look back. Return to the source of your journey. Remember the man you were when you first sought the Light, and know that the fire still burns within you, waiting only for you to tend it once more.

Brother,
As April’s vibrant growth matures, we transition into the active labors of the season—a time when our focus shifts from individual renewal to the collective strength of our great Fraternity.
May brings with it one of the most significant periods in our Masonic calendar: the Annual Communication of the Grand Lodge of Indiana, held this year on May 19th and 20th. It is a time when Brethren from every corner of our state gather in unity to attend to the essential business of our Craft and to elect the leadership that will guide us forward.
For us at Porter Lodge No. 137, this year’s gathering holds a profound and singular importance. It is with immense pride and anticipation that we look toward the installation of RWB John Bridegroom as our next Most Worshipful Grand Master. To see a Brother from our own Lodge ascend to this high office is a reflection of the dedication, character, and service that we have long admired within our walls. We look forward to supporting him as he begins his tenure, confident that his leadership will continue to light the path for Freemasonry in Indiana.
Let us carry the spirit of this historic moment into our own labors this month. As we prepare for the events of mid-May, may we reflect on the strength of our bonds and the gravity of the work we do together. Whether you are joining us in person at the Annual Communication or supporting from home, let us stand united in this celebration of progress and fraternal fellowship.

Our Stated Meeting on April 7th covered a range of essential business, including the difficult task of auditing our membership rolls. After much deliberation, members who have remained dormant and failed to fulfill their financial obligations or communicate with the Lodge were removed. While this is a painful process, it is necessary to ensure the health of our Fraternity. Later in the month, on April 28th, the Brethren gathered once again to delve into the mysteries of the Entered Apprentice degree, discovering new perspectives on its timeless lessons.

WB Lucas Pacukovski:
Why Members Drift Away from Freemasonry…
Freemasonry, like many long-standing fraternal organizations, occasionally faces a quiet challenge that is often more felt than spoken about: members drifting away after a period of initial enthusiasm. This is not usually the result of a single cause or dramatic turning point, but rather a gradual fading of connection, purpose, or engagement. Understanding why this happens requires looking at the human side of membership

WB VIVIAN (VIV) RITTEL
The safeguarding of our Lodge’s history is not a passive act - it is an obligation entrusted to us, a quiet but enduring labor that binds past, present, and future into one continuous thread. Within that history lives the spirit of the brethren who came before us: men who gave their time, their effort, and their vision so that something lasting might stand where once there was only potential.

A Final Resting Place for Masonic Aprons
Every jurisdiction is familiar with this dilemma--what to do with the Master Mason aprons brought to them by families of Brethren who have passed away? While they're intended to be buried with the Brother, often times this doesn't happen. Instead, many of these aprons are brought to Grand Lodge by the loved ones of the departed Mason.

The refinement of the Lodge room has unfolded in stages, and with the recent arrival of the remaining officer chairs, it is now complete. A few months ago, the Master's and Wardens’ chairs were the first to be installed—setting a new standard of craftsmanship and quietly hinting at what was to come.

A Deeper Look at the Entered Apprentice Degree
On April 29, we held a roundtable discussion exploring the deeper meanings of the Entered Apprentice degree. Brothers from five different area lodges gathered to exchange knowledge, share perspectives, and reflect on various aspects of the first degree, each contributing valuable insight from their own experience.

What we Preserve, Preserves Us
Preservation is among the highest duties entrusted to a Lodge, for it is through this deliberate act of care that the continuity, identity, and spirit of the Craft are sustained. What we safeguard today - whether written, symbolic, or physical - forms the bridge between generations, ensuring that the labors, lessons, and legacy of those who came before us are neither diminished nor forgotten. In preserving the inheritance of the Lodge, we do more than protect objects or records; we uphold a living tradition, one that binds past, present, and future into a single, enduring design.

You were not born at the beginning of something—you were born when everything has already come alive. May does not ask permission. It doesn’t test the waters or wait for the right moment.
It arrives full, confident, and assured in its place in the turning of the year. And so are you. Where others prepare or endure, you simply are—grounded, steady, and unmistakably present.

✵ FROM THE SECRETARY’S DESK
|
|
|
|
|
Brothers,
As we enter the month of May, the Lodge turns its attention toward a season of significant Masonic activity, fellowship, and celebration. This month marks the Annual Communication in Indianapolis, taking place on May 19th and 20th, where our own Right Worshipful Brother John Bridegroom will be installed as the Grand Master of the Freemasons of Indiana. This moment is not only a personal honor for RWB Bridegroom, but also a proud occasion for our Lodge and all who have had the privilege of working alongside him in the Craft.
If you are not able to attend the Annual Communication, we encourage the Brethren to keep him in their thoughts and to join in recognizing this important milestone in his Masonic journey.
|
|
|
|
|
In the spirit of unity and reflection, we also invite all Brothers to join us in celebrating 250 years of America’s Masonic and civic heritage by actively participating in the upcoming Lodge activities. The first of these will be our Presentation Day: The Triad of Light, on Saturday, June 6th, where three distinguished speakers will present engaging and thought-provoking topics of Masonic interest. This gathering will also provide an opportunity for the Brethren to extend their support to the Masonic Home in Franklin, which sustained fire damage last month. Your presence and generosity will be deeply meaningful as we extend relief to a place that has long served as a home for our extended Masonic family.

Following our May labors, we will next convene for an Entered Apprentice Degree on May 26th. We extend a heartfelt invitation to all Brethren to attend and help create a memorable and meaningful experience for our new candidate. The presence of the Lodge is what transforms a degree into a lasting impression, and your participation will help ensure that this night reflects the full spirit and brotherhood of the Craft.
Looking further ahead, we are also pleased to announce that our annual Lodge picnic will take place in early August. Additional details, including the date, location, and arrangements, will be shared in the coming weeks. This gathering will provide another opportunity for fellowship, relaxation, and strengthening the bonds that unite us as Brothers.
We look forward to seeing many of you in attendance throughout these upcoming events as we continue to labor together in friendship, service, and harmony.
